Why We Source 9.5oz Custom Heavyweight Tees — And Why It Matters

Why We Source 9.5oz Custom Heavyweight Tees — And Why It Matters

Most brands won't tell you what's in their shirt. We will.

Walk into any streetwear store and pick up a tee. Flip it over. Look at the tag.

If you can find the fabric weight at all — and most brands don't want you to — you'll probably see something between 4.2oz and 5.5oz. That's the industry standard. It's also why most tees feel thin the moment you put them on, lose their shape after ten washes, and end up in a donation pile within a year.

We decided early on that wasn't good enough.

What Fabric Weight Actually Means

Fabric weight is measured in ounces per square yard. The higher the number, the denser and heavier the fabric — and the more it costs to produce.

Here's a quick breakdown of what you're actually getting at different weights:

4.2–5.0oz — The fast fashion standard. Lightweight, cheap to produce, feels thin. Fine for a promotional giveaway. Not built for daily wear.

5.3–6.5oz — The premium blank range. This is where most quality streetwear brands operate. Our LA-made line lives here — built on 6.5oz garment-dyed heavyweights like the LA Apparel 1801GD. Noticeably better than fast fashion — structured, holds its shape, built for real wear. This is already above what most brands offer.

9.5oz — What we custom manufacture for our Premium Streetwear line. You will feel the difference the moment you pick it up.

Why We Went to Pakistan

When we decided to build our own blank, we couldn't find what we wanted off the shelf. The custom weight, the specific construction, the garment wash finish — it didn't exist at the quality level we needed from domestic or standard wholesale sources.

So we went to the manufacturer directly.

Our core heavyweight tees — the JESUS KING OF KINGS, the CREATION, and the JESUS Boxy Cream — are built on a custom 9.5oz 100% cotton blank manufactured to Great Works Clothing specifications. That means we control the fabric density, the construction, the wash process, and the finish. No compromises.

The result is a tee that feels more like a structured garment than a blank. It holds its shape. It gets softer with every wash without losing its structure. It drapes the way a boxy tee should drape — with intention, not accident.

Stewardship Over Speed

There's a theological case to be made for building things well.

If you believe — as we do — that everything you have is stewarded rather than owned, then how you spend that stewardship matters. Buying a $12 tee that falls apart in six months isn't stewardship. It's consumption.

We price our custom heavyweights at $35 because that's what it costs to build something that lasts. Not because we're chasing a margin. Because we believe the person wearing it deserves a product that holds up as long as the message on it does.

Two Tiers. Both Built Right.

Not every piece in the Great Works lineup comes from Pakistan — and that's intentional.

Our LA-made line is built on 6.5oz garment-dyed heavyweights — the LA Apparel 1801GD. Designed and printed in Los Angeles, these are premium blanks that sit well above the fast fashion standard. The LOVED & SENT Tee, the JESUS IS MY KING Oversized Crew, and the JESUS Camo Letter Tee all live here. Substantial, soft, built for daily wear.

Our Premium Streetwear line — the JESUS KING OF KINGS, the CREATION Tee, and the JESUS Boxy Cream — goes further. These are custom 9.5oz ultra-heavyweight tees manufactured to Great Works Clothing specifications. A different category entirely. If you want the heaviest, most structured tee we make, this is it.

Both tiers are built above the industry standard. The difference is how far above.
